The Blog is Back

Hey alumni - I've taken over the club blog from Scott, who has moved on to his job in Silicon Valley. We'll start using this as another means to communicate with the club on a more informal basis... We have some great events coming up:
  • Toast to IAP - Tuesday Jan 22nd
  • Talking Politics with Prof. Berinsky - Thursday February 7th
  • 3rd Annual MIT Comedy Show - Saturday February 16th
  • 5th Annual MIT Wine Tasting - sometime this spring

You should be getting details on these events in your email; if not, please contact me at jwolters@alum.mit.edu and we'll figure out how to get you on the club mailing list. See you soon!

Mark Your Calendars - MIT Club Wine Tasting

It's always one of our most popular events - with very good reason. The 2006 MIT Club Wine Tasting event is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, April 30, at the lovely Violette, so get ready for a phenomenal French theme. There will be great wines, great food, and the company of your fellow MIT alums on a spring Sunday afternoon. Further details will be forthcoming, stay tuned.

Regular Bar/Restaurant Events

Everyone who attended seemed to enjoy themselves at the Toast To IAP, and several folks suggested that the MIT Club have some sort of regular event, be it just a meet-up at a different bar each month or two, or possibly hit some of the new restaurants in town as a group every now and then. This all sounds good to me.

I'm certainly open to any and all suggestions for these sorts of informal, low-key Young Alumni events. Is there a particular night of the week that is best? Any spots you've been dying to go to, and just haven't had a reason until now? Let me know in the comments thread here.

Best Pizza In Atlanta?

The discussion began last night at the Toast To IAP event, but I don't believe that we came to any sort of consensus. I'm a New York City native, where they raise us to be pizza snobs, so I'm of the opinion that there's really no good pizza in this town.

What's your take on Atlanta's pizza situation? There are certainly many options to choose from - Fellini's, Mellow Mushroom, Slice, Piebar, Fritti, Ray's, etc. (Warning: some of those links have sound.) Discuss.

Toast To IAP - Prologue

Thanks again to the many Atlanta Young Alumni (some brand new to Atlanta, and some not), who came out for the 2006 Toast To IAP on Wednesday, January 18 at The Globe in Midtown. Many fine cocktails were imbibed, some business contacts were made, important issues - such as where in Atlanta to find good pizza - were discussed, we tried not to be too conspicuously nerdy, and a fun time on a Wednesday night was had by all. Thanks to everyone who attended, and we look forward to seeing the rest of y'all out there at future MIT Club events.

Blazers and Bling??

Folks, this is why you didn't go to an Ivy League school:

"The Yale Club turns into a nightclub for an evening of preppy fabulous fun. Roll up in your Benz to the Tap Room where young members from the Ivy League circuit will be chillin’."

Yikes.

Just a friendly reminder to register for the Toast to IAP on Wednesday, January 18, at 8 pm at The Globe. I promise it will not be preppy fabulous, but it should be a good time. See y'all there.

Toast To IAP - Register Now!

Atlanta Young Alumni, you can now register for the 2006 Toast to IAP, which will be taking place on Wednesday, January 18 at The Globe in Midtown. Check out the official registration for further information. Although the event is free to attend, please register officially so that we have a reasonably accurate idea of the number of people who will be there. Thanks, we look forward to seeing y'all there.

Toast to IAP - January 18th

Mark your calendars, the MIT Club of Atlanta will be hosting the Toast to IAP for local Young Alumni (0-10 years out for undergrads and 0-5 years out for grads), on Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at The Globe in Midtown's Technology Square. Full details will be sent in the next couple of weeks via the Alumni Association, but it's basically just a reason to meet up and have a few drinks on a Wednesday evening. Hope to see a lot of you there.

New Club of Atlanta Website Is Operational

The MIT Club of Atlanta website has undergone an upgrade as part of the Alumni Association's Alumni Site Builder system. Event information will automatically link to the SmarTrans payment system, the contact information for Club officers will automatically be up to date and correct, and there's a whole bunch of other webternet goodness. Please check it out and let me know what y'all think of it here on the blog.

I'd also like to take the opportunity now to ask if there are any club members out there who want to create some different banner images for the website in addition to the standard MIT ones provided by the folks back in Cambridge. If you're bored and enjoy a little bit of graphic design in your spare time, create a JPG or GIF file with a width of 736 pixels and a height of 116 pixels and send it to me, and I'll be happy to throw it up there. Just make sure it says "MIT Club of Atlanta".

Toast to IAP

The Alumni Association has asked us if we want to participate in the Toast to IAP event this year on Wednesday, January 18, 2006. Alumni clubs around the world will gather at the same time in bars and restaurants to raise a glass to IAP (yes it's cheesy, but you did go to MIT instead of UCLA). It is normally an event geared towards Young Alumni, though I certainly wouldn't preclude anyone else who wanted to participate.

Is there anyone here in Atlanta who wants the Club to participate in the Toast to IAP this year? Probably a place like The Globe would be good for this. Any volunteers for organizing and running it if I give the folks back in Cambridge the go-ahead to include us? Please leave your comments here soon, the Alumni Association has to know by Friday because they have a marketing campaign ready to launch for this event. Thanks y'all.

New Club of Atlanta website soon

Folks, stay tuned this week, we will be upgrading the Club of Atlanta website to the new Alumni Site Builder system that the Alumni Association is now favoring. It will be very easy for club officers to update, and should be a big improvement. We'll send out an email when it's up and running.

And along with the new website (which will be at the same address), I will get back to regular updates here with the Club of Atlanta blog. We'll have mostly the same information in both places, but we can get your feedback here.

Best BBQ in Atlanta

OK, I guess cheeseburgers aren't your thing (other than Erick and me), how about barbecue? Where's the best 'cue in Atlanta? My vote's for Rolling Bones, but there are a lot of great options. Discuss.

Braves game

We are trying to set up a club event for the Braves-Pirates game at Turner Field on Saturday night, July 30. If there's anyone out there with access to a luxury suite, please let us know. Otherwise, we'll be getting a block of seats for the game. Turner Field is a great place to watch a game (as a Mets fan myself I'm jealous of pretty much every stadium because Shea is decrepit, but I digress), the new high definition Jumbotron is incredible, and the Saturday night crowd is always good for people-watching. Please comment if you're interested, can hook us up with a luxury suite, are a Pirates fan and want to trash-talk, etc.

-Scott
liebs@alum.mit.edu

P.S. I also want to make it clear that the MIT Club of Atlanta blog is for the entire club, not just for the Young Alumni. So enjoy!

Best Cheeseburger in Atlanta

This is the first of what will be a regular feature on the blog, today I'm asking y'all where can you find the best cheeseburger in Atlanta? My vote goes to the Ghetto Burger at Ann's Snack Bar on Memorial Drive, it's not just a burger it's an experience. A distant second goes to The Vortex, even with bonus points for having Shiner Bock on tap. What's your opinion? Discuss.

Welcome to the MIT Club of Atlanta blog

In an attempt to improve communication between club members and organization of club events, we have created the MIT Club of Atlanta blog. I will be regularly posting (on at least a weekly basis, so check back often), with club news as well as suggestions for future club events, both general and specific. Please feel free to leave comments as often as you'd like, and email me with new topics I should post - use the "Email the Blog" link. Hope to hear from you and see y'all at the next MIT Club of Atlanta event.

Screen On The Green

It's that time of year again, as the Screen On The Green series returns to Piedmont Park, each Thursday night at sunset in June. A couple MIT Club of Atlanta members have suggested this for a club event. If anyone's interested in getting some MIT alumni together to see a classic film under the stars in the middle of the city, here's the spot to leave comments and get things organized.
